What Will You Study in ANAV?
ATPL Navigation covers the theory, systems, radio navigation principles and practical calculations required for airline transport operations.
The course begins with the study of aircraft navigation instrumentation and systems, including the static and pitot system, gyroscopic and laser ring instruments, weather radar, radar and radio altimeters, and GPS.
Students then examine the principles of operation of radio navigation aids, together with their errors and limitations. This includes determining aircraft position using radio navigation information, including RMI indications with VOR and ADF, and developing the practical skills required to interpret and use an En Route Chart (ERC).
The practical navigation component includes plotting and calculating Critical Points and Points of Safe Diversion, together with calculating track intercepts without the use of a chart using basic trigonometry.
Extensive worked examples, revision questions and practical navigation exercises are included throughout the course to help students develop the accuracy, speed and examination technique required for the CASA ANAV exam.
ANAV Full-Time Ground School – Sunshine Coast Airport
For students completing ANAV as part of AFT’s Full-Time ATPL Ground School, classroom tuition is conducted from Monday to Friday, covering both navigation theory and practical calculations.
Students work through the course material, worked examples and navigation exercises during the week before progressing to their AFT ANAV Practice CyberExams over the weekend and on Monday.
Students then sit the CASA ANAV PEXO examination on Tuesday.
This structured progression from classroom tuition, to revision and practice, to Practice CyberExams and finally the CASA examination is designed to build navigation knowledge, calculation accuracy and confidence throughout the course.
ANAV Distance Learning Study
The same comprehensive ANAV study material is also available through AFT’s Distance Learning program for students who prefer to study independently and progress through the subject at their own pace.
Distance Learning students receive AFT’s Navigation course material, revision resources, Random Question Generators and ANAV Practice CyberExams, providing multiple opportunities to practise the theory, calculations and navigation techniques required for the CASA examination.
