ATPL(H) Theory
ATPL Helicopter Theory written by Warren McIvor
Advanced Flight Theory has been at the forefront of helicopter theory training since Warren McIvor co-founded the company with Nathan Higgins in 1993. With more than 68 years of combined experience, they have helped over 25,000 students successfully pass their aviation theory exams. Warren has taught generations of helicopter pilots their ATPL theory and continues to lead the way through providing AFT’s ATPL(H) Distance Learning Course – the only ATPL Helicopter Theory course of its kind in Australia. Beyond developing comprehensive theory materials, Warren also pioneered AFT’s Practice CyberExams and Random Question Generator (RQG) system more than two decades ago. These innovative learning tools remain central to student exam success today. Designed to strengthen your knowledge before you sit your CASA exam, AFT’s Practice CyberExams and RQGs help you study smarter – not harder.
Advanced Flight Theory is proud to have Australia’s best ATPL pass rate. Our past and present students are our best advertisement!
“I can not recommend the AFT ATPL(H) Distance Learning course enough. Warren McIvor knows his theory. The ATPL course notes are thorough and written in a way that makes even the most complex subjects manageable. The Practice CyberExams are outstanding as they closely reflect the style and standard of the actual CASA exams. I passed each subject first go”
ATPL(H) Distance Learning Course
Passing the ATPL(H) examination is an important step in your aviation career. As specialist ATPL theory instructors, we are well aware of the difficulty most pilots have studying the Part 61 Manual of Standards Aeronautical Knowledge Standards (Syllabus). Not only do many pilots require assistance to revise their Commercial Pilot theory, they also need to have the new concepts in ATPL(H) presented in an easy to understand format.
Advanced Flight Theory has developed a comprehensive, easy to follow ATPL(H) Distance Learning course to fully prepare you for your ATPL(H) CASA exams. Studying AFT’s Distance Learning Course is an excellent way to conveniently bring study directly to your home to fit study around work, social or family commitments.
We offer a complete course covering all seven of the CASA ATPL(H) subjects:
- Flight Planning
- Performance and Loading
- Navigation
- Aerodynamics and Aircraft Systems
- Air Law
- Human Factors
- Meteorology
The ATPL(H) Distance Learning course can be purchased as a 7 subject complete discounted package, or the subjects can be purchased individually. Free Australia-wide postage is included in all of our Distance Learning courses. We are happy to post the package overseas, however an overseas postage fee will apply. We will contact you prior to dispatch to quote overseas postage charges.
AFT’s Distance Learning hybrid approach is the perfect combination of printed study material and online learning tools. Professionally printed course notes and revision tests will be posted to you – our hard copy course notes are easy to study and give you the ability to write notes, tag and highlight which helps to boost retention in layer your knowledge. The course notes are then supported by realistic online Practice CyberExams and our “Random Question Generator’s”. Each RQG creates a brand new, never seen before question covering an important calculation required to pass the subject’s CASA exam. After completing the calculation, you submit your answer and have the full workings presented so you can carefully check every part of your work. Please view the RQG demo below. There are millions of different question data combinations, so you never do the same calculation twice. With unlimited practice on new questions, you will become fully prepared for any calculation on the topic that CASA presents to you!

ATPL(H) Full-time Ground-School/Upgrade Option
We offer a Full-Time Ground School course for ATPL Navigation and ATPL(H) Aerodynamics and Aircraft Systems. The remaining five subjects are completed by our Distance Learning course. Navigation is a generic subject between both Helicopter and Aeroplane. Aerodynamics and Aircraft Systems is 80% the same content for both Helicopter and Aeroplane. Since the majority of the Syllabus is common between the two and has a large focus on Aeroplanes, we find Helicopter pilots do benefit in coming along to the Full-Time Ground School course for these two subjects.
If you are studying the Distance Learning course for these two subjects and are finding them difficult, an upgrade option is available to bring your course material along and enrol on a Full-time Ground School course. Please see the ATPL(H) Schedule and Fees page for course dates!
Practice CyberExams and Random Question Generators
Our Practice CyberExam system is designed to help determine if you are fully prepared to attempt the actual CASA Exams for each subject. Although we do not test actual CASA exam questions, the Practice CyberExams do show you the workload involved in the actual CASA Exam and will give you an indication if you are ready to sit your exam.
Our unique and specialised Random Questions Generators (RGQs) give you unlimited access to over 80 different mathematical style questions. Each RQG creates a brand new, never seen before question covering an important calculation required to pass the subject’s CASA Exam. After completing the calculation, you submit your answer and have the full workings presented so you can carefully check every part of your work.
There a million’s of different question data combinations, so you never do the same calculation twice. With unlimited practice on new questions, you will become fully prepared for any calculation on the topic that CASA presents to you!
